Project Description
The Cairo Metro Line 1 rehabilitation aims to enhance capacity and service quality. This initiative will reduce headways from 3.5 minutes to 2.5 minutes, improving efficiency and safety to handle future demands as ridership is expected to reach 844 million by 2041.
The project is funded by the EBRD, EIB, French Development Agency, and the Egyptian Government, this project is a key component of Cairo’s urban transport expansion.
Upgrades include:
• Modernizing track, power, and control systems.
• Enhancing station facilities and electromechanical systems.
• Integrating advanced management techniques for seamless project delivery.
Timeline

MENA Rail / Consortium Role
- Monitor and audit the performance of the Client and their consultants;
- Monitor and control the implementation of the contracts on behalf of the Bank;
- Monitor the implementation of mitigation measures included in the Environmental and Social Action Plan (“ESAP”), Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), EBRD Performance Requirements (“PR’s”) compliance with EU Environmental, Health and Safety (“EHS”) requirements, good industry practice and other requirements of the Project documentation as applicable; and
- Identify and report to the Bank any key problems which may threaten the successful implementation of the Project so that corrective action can be taken.
- Analyze and make comments on material changes, variation order(s) and contract amendment(s) which may occur throughout the implementation of the Project regarding its design, operations, costs and timing.
- Provide advice to the EBRD in order that it can disburse funds in accordance with the provision of the Financing Documents.
